GOALS

SDG 12

Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns.

One of the indicators is the number of national policy instrument to promote sustainable consumption and production patterns. Another one is global fossil fuel subsidies. An increase in domestic recycling and a reduced reliance on the global plastic waste trade are other actions that might help meet the goal.

AI can optimize resource utilization and minimizes waste through analysis of production and consumption data patterns. In this chart we observe the Aquaculture production and capture fisheries production (in metric tons).

This perspective offers a real-time view of the worldwide news on consumption-related topics, providing us with a media perspective on the progress at the different fronts of SDG 12.

A SDG Live Report is what it is all about! Here, you can have a real-time perspective of the state of the world in regard to AI and sustainability, tracking some of the main issues to address in the near future.

AI has significantly contributed to advancing Sustainable Development Goal 12 (SDG 12), which aims to ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns. Between 2015 and 2023, there have been 27,477 scientific publications investigating the role of AI in promoting sustainable practices across various sectors. These studies emphasize AI’s potential to optimize resource use, reduce waste, and improve supply chain efficiency. For instance, AI can enhance manufacturing processes by predicting demand, minimizing overproduction, and facilitating recycling efforts. Despite the relatively lower media exposure, with 11,571 news articles, there is growing public interest in how AI can drive sustainability in consumption and production. The development of 107 AI policies targeting SDG 12 underscores a burgeoning commitment from policymakers to leverage AI for promoting sustainable practices, focusing on creating frameworks that support the ethical and efficient use of AI technologies in various industries.

In the next 5 to 10 years, AI is expected to play an even more critical role in achieving sustainable consumption and production. AI-driven innovations will likely lead to more efficient resource management and waste reduction strategies, enabling industries to minimize their environmental footprint. Advanced AI algorithms can facilitate the transition to a circular economy by enhancing recycling processes, designing sustainable products, and optimizing the use of materials. As consumer awareness of sustainability issues grows, AI will also support the development of personalized recommendations for sustainable consumption, helping individuals make more environmentally friendly choices. Policymakers will need to develop comprehensive strategies to ensure that AI technologies are used ethically and effectively, promoting transparency and accountability. Collaboration between governments, businesses, and research institutions will be crucial to harness AI’s full potential in advancing SDG 12, fostering sustainable consumption and production patterns globally.
